FAQ
How Smash Wed works — the weekly singles league and the monthly team doubles night.
Singles league every Wednesday
How do I sign up?
Use the Join tab and pick a Wednesday. Signups close at noon Pacific on match day. The first 24 players are confirmed; everyone after that is on the waitlist and moves up automatically if a confirmed player drops. Please bring 2 good quality birds; court rental is $5/person.
How are pools drawn?
At check-in the organizer draws round-robin pools by standings — the top-ranked players go to Pool A, the next group to Pool B, and so on (2 pools for up to 16 players, 3 for up to 21, 4 above that). New players without a ranking are placed last. If someone doesn't show, a Guest takes their spot so the pool stays even.
How are games scored and how do I earn ranking points?
You play everyone in your pool once. Your rank points for the night are the number of games you won, plus a +1 bonus for playing in a top pool (Pool A when there are 3 pools; Pools A and B when there are 4).
How are the standings calculated?
Your average is the mean of your best 4 weeks out of your last 6 weeks played. Weeks you skip don't count against you — but a 4th missed week in a row is marked "1mo absence" with 0 points until you've played 2 weeks again.
Players tied on average are separated by rank points in the most recent week they all played, then by their most recent head-to-head result. Anyone still tied shares the rank.
Team doubles last Wednesday of the month
What is it?
Once a month the singles league takes a break for a team night. Everyone who signs up is split into 4 or 6 teams (up to 32 players), and teams play doubles against each other. Sign up on the Join tab the same way — team doubles nights are labelled there.
How are teams formed?
Teams are drawn by standings in tiers: the top players are split between Team A and Team B, the next group between C and D, then E and F — alternating within each pair (1st to A, 2nd to B, 3rd to A, 4th to B, …). Requested partner pairs are placed first, in the tier of the stronger partner, so everyone below them shifts down one place. So A vs B is the top match-up, and each match-up is two evenly split teams of similar level. Everyone signed up is drawn except no-shows. Every team has an even number of players and both teams in a match-up are the same size — a guest fills any gap (a late arrival takes the guest's spot). A guest plays for a team but doesn't earn ranking points.
Who plays with whom?
When you sign up for a team doubles night you can name a preferred partner on the Join page (they should sign up and name you too). The draw keeps requested pairs together where it can; the organizer pairs up everyone else. Requests are a preference, not a promise — the organizer may change pairs or put pairs on different teams to keep the teams balanced.
Before the first game the organizer can adjust the team's doubles pairs. In each round every pair plays twice, against two different pairs from the other team, in a set order that spreads out rest (from 3 pairs up, nobody plays two games in a row).
Before round 2 starts, a team can re-pair (the organizer sets it on the site). If both teams keep their pairs, round 2's order brings in the match-ups round 1 didn't have. If a team re-pairs, round 2 is arranged so the new pairs face as few of their round 1 opponents as possible. With 3 pairs a side, each pair meets its third opponent and replays one from round 1, so every pair plays all three opposing pairs during the night.
How does a match between two teams work?
- Team A plays Team B, Team C plays Team D, and so on.
- Each doubles game is to 21 points. At 20–20 it's win by 2, capped at 25 (first to 25 wins, even 25–24) — unless the organizer announces a different target that night.
- A round is won by the team that wins more doubles games; if that's level, by total point difference.
- Teams play two rounds. If each team wins one, one tiebreak doubles game (also to 21, capped at 25) decides the match — each team picks any two of its players for it.
Does it count for the standings?
The organizer decides for each team doubles night. An exhibition night doesn't affect anyone's standings at all — it's as if the week didn't happen. On a ranked night you earn one point per doubles game you win (up to 4 over the two rounds) plus 2 bonus points if your team wins its match — at most 6, the same scale as a singles night. The tiebreak game only decides the match; guests don't earn points.
